Now the genre of all these stories is dark fantasy and as it is a genre I most enjoy reading, I must say I wasn’t disappointed. Each story took me down a route that I thought I would suss out the ending but always shocked me and left me wanting more answers when the plot twists came out of the woodwork! The writing is so well done that you turn each page with ease, completely engrossed with the story that S. J. Budd has provided. The darkness within these stories is done in a way that makes you want to keep reading but part of you knows that something frightening is yet to come.
In all honestly I would highly recommend this collection as it does have a little something for everyone (even if you’re not a huge horror/ dark fantasy fan) as the story lines are very well thought out and the twists will leave you speechless. I will definitely be looking forward to any future works of S. J. Budd as her writing is spectacular (and scary!).
Get ready for nine short tales that will entertain, amuse, creep you out and think twice about things you wish for! S.J. Budd’s SPELLS AND PERSUASIONSare short, yet complete tales that invite you to enter each world and feel the relationships between each character, whether they are positive, painful or terrifying! How do you handle saving a child you see as a victim only to discover you have made a deadly mistake? If your husband was cheating on you, what would you do, how would you feel, what would you wish for? What if you had a crush on a boy from afar? Would you dabble with magic to gain his undying affection for eternity without ever having spoken to him? Think back to your school days before you answer that!
S.J. Budd’s writing is dark, edgy and sometimes far too believable as I stopped to think, what if? Human relationships at their darkest, magic at its most dangerous, are these just portrayals of the dark side of being human? S.J. Budd has a talent for crisp presentation and keeping each tale short and, well, maybe not so sweet, but certainly intriguing! A perfect lunch break read, one tale at a time! Take a walk on the dark side, you may just like it.

Creepy children, spurned wives, imperfect romances turned sour. So is the world of S.J. Budd's "Spells and Persuasions". The nine stories take place in various times and places; some are set in the modern here and now, while others pull us back into fantastical dream worlds of the past. However, at the center of every story is a complex relationship- our relationships. Whether a mother-son bond, or reluctant lovers, or revengeful exes, the heart of this collection are the roles we all have to play and the inherent selfishness and darkness imbedded in our very selves that makes relationships so difficult.
This collection was a thoroughly enjoyable read. Strong, clear writing. Every story has a hook to latch onto. Recommended! S.E.Casey
Budd definitely knows how to spin a yarn. If you like dark fiction, you've come to the right place. These stories are all very different, entertaining in their own right. Some are set in the past and some set in what seems could be a more modern setting. My favorite piece is the one the collection is named after: "Spells and Persuasions". It's one of the cautionary tales about being careful what you wish for, especially when a little magic is involved. Theresa Braun
